Vance ran in a small invitational in southern California with his cross country team. I invited myself as an extra chaperone because I really just wanted to see Vance run and spend some time with him. Kathleen and I both had tests on Thursday morning so we couldn't leave with the team. We opted to leave Thursday night and drive in the dark. It was fun. We arrived about 1am.
We spent Friday morning, resting, walking along the beach, some were doing homework or reading. We got to the race just after lunchtime. This is Vance waiting, wearing his lucky hairband, don't ask me why.
This is very close to pre-race. He is saving all his energy.
He ran in the fast Varsity heat. Man, that kid is fast. It was a 3.1 mile course, with a wicked hill. I never saw it because I wasn't willing to walk that far.
It was a fight for 10th place. Sometimes Vance was winning, sometimes the other kid. In the end, he was eeked out by a two second lead and ended up 11th. Still awesome.
When we arrived back at the hotel, we had some pizza and then being the loser pregnant mom I am, I went to bed. Kathleen and the other coach stayed up to make sure everyone was in bed. The rent-a-cop only had to come once and then everyone was quiet:)
Saturday morning, we woke up and walked to the beach. I literally layed there and did nothing for like 3 hours. Heaven. Well, I didn't do nothing, I burnt like a piece of bacon in a frying pan without knowing it. It was overcast and I just sat or sat while taking lots of pictures of the kids.
Vance did a little boogie boarding.
And a little skurfing...check out those abs. I know I am jealous.
Kathleen got to do a little boogie boarding. And, by the way, thanks for letting me tag along with you Kat, I had a fabulous time.
And, here is me. 24 weeks pregnant, completely stretching out the only suit that I could get on and stay modest in. No boogie boarding for me. I think Vance was a little embarrassed, but too bad for him. If he only knew the things he did that embarrassed me, he might think twice. I hope someday he looks back and is glad I joined him. I had a blast. Thank goodness for the aloe vera growing in my front yard.

Sounds fun! I'm sure Vance will remember an awesome mom who went to see him race not a mom who embarrassed him. Besides I think you look great:) Brent coulda told you not to be fooled by a cloudy day at the beach. He's gotten severely burned on days like that before:)
You should get extra bonus points for going to see Vance race while pregnant. Good for you! I think you look great!
Someday the boy will appreciate the time alone that he had with his mom.
